Kayaking & Paddleboarding at Woodlands RV Park & Marina

Bring your own gear, explore at your own pace, and let the river become part of your story.

There’s something timeless about floating down a river with the sun on your back and the current carrying you forward. At Woodlands RV Park & Marina, the Athabasca River isn’t just scenery—it’s an invitation. Whether you’re gliding along in a kayak or finding your balance on a paddleboard, this stretch of the river offers calm adventure, natural beauty, and the kind of quiet that stays with you.

Bring Your Own Gear

We don’t offer equipment rentals on-site, so guests are encouraged to bring their own kayak or paddleboard. Not sure what to bring? Here are a few tips:

Kayaks

  • Inflatable kayaks are lightweight and easy to transport—ideal for casual paddlers or families. Look for models with multiple air chambers and reinforced bottoms.
  • Sit-on-top kayaks are stable and great for beginners, especially in warmer weather.
  • Touring kayaks are best for experienced paddlers covering longer distances.

Paddleboards (SUPs)

  • Inflatable SUPs are portable and surprisingly durable. Great for campers and easier to store.
  • Look for boards with tie-downs for dry bags, and non-slip deck pads for safety.
  • Use a paddle with adjustable height and always wear a SUP leash and a PFD (personal flotation device).

Safety First

The Athabasca River is beautiful, but like any river, it deserves respect. There are no lifeguards or supervised water activity at Woodlands RV, and all use of the river is at your own discretion. We strongly recommend:

  • Always wear a PFD
  • Paddle with a buddy or let someone know your route
  • Stay close to shore if you’re unfamiliar with currents
  • Watch for fallen trees, debris, or shifting sandbars
  • Avoid paddling during high water or stormy conditions

For families, adult supervision is a must when kids are near or on the water.

Where to Paddle

The stretch of the Athabasca River near Fort Assiniboine is ideal for relaxed half-day trips. A few spots worth exploring:

  • Upstream Exploration: Paddle upstream from the marina in the early morning when the current is calm, then drift back down with ease.
  • Confluence with Freeman River: Just a short distance from the park, this spot is scenic and often calm.
  • Evening Golden Hour Paddle: The light is stunning as it hits the water late in the day—perfect for quiet reflection or photography.

If you’re planning a longer trip or a one-way paddle, ask about shuttle options or drop-offs.

Make It Fun

Woodlands is a great place to turn paddling into a friendly activity. Campers sometimes organize informal races, distance challenges, or SUP yoga meetups. Families can plan treasure hunts along the shoreline or timed paddling games. While not organized by the park, we love seeing guests create their own fun. Keep it safe, lighthearted, and inclusive.

What to Pack

  • Dry bag for valuables and snacks
  • Water shoes or sandals with a good grip
  • Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Whistle or signaling device for safety
  • Light layers and a towel

Come Float With Us

Paddling at Woodlands RV isn’t just an activity—it’s a way to connect with the land, the river, and yourself. Whether you’re drifting solo or sharing the water with friends and family, there’s nothing quite like the rhythm of a paddle and the sound of the current. Bring your gear, plan a little, and let the river do the rest.
