Riverside Adventures

For campers at Woodlands RV Park, it’s all about the river. The Athabasca offers calm mornings, fishing spots, and days spent paddling or just watching the water roll by.

Kayaking & Paddleboarding

Bring your own kayak or paddleboard and head out right from shore. Click for details and suggested routes.

Bring Your Own Boat

You can launch your jet boat right from camp and spend the day out on the water. There’s a small fee for boat access, and a few things to know before you head out — tap to learn more.

September Long Fireworks

Last year, over 100 campers gathered river side to cheer, laugh, and gaze upward as fireworks painted the night red and white. The booms echoed, the crowd roared, and the sky shimmered—it felt like it felt like RV campers everywhere were celebrating the end of the season with us.

History at Your Doorstep

Fort Assiniboine has seen fur traders, gold rush travelers, and homesteaders come through these woods. Today, their stories live on—just minutes from camp.

Klondyke Trail (16 min)

Walk the same trail used in the 1800s by prospectors chasing gold and pack trains delivering mail to the Yukon. A 24 km route full of quiet history.

The Klondyke
Vega Ferry (24 min)

Still crossing the Athabasca today, this ferry once carried supplies, livestock, and letters north during the gold rush. A rare piece of working history.

Fort Assiniboine Museum (2 mins)

See the tools, photos, and stories left behind by traders, settlers, and gold seekers who shaped this region. Open in summer.

The Barrhead Centennial Museum (25 mins)

Wander through local history with artifacts from pioneer life, Indigenous culture, and the early farming days that built the region.

Offroad & Quad Excursions

Trails start right at Woodlands RV Park and lead into the dunes and forest just a short drive away.

Timeu OHV Recreation Area
(25 min)

A 38 km² ATV park just north of Fort Assiniboine on Hwy 661. The terrain is rolling sandhills with some wetlands; trails are well marked and link up into loops. There’s a main staging area (parking and picnic tables) at the trailhead. Difficulty is intermediate – expect open sandy stretches mixed with tighter forested sections.

Fort Assiniboine Sandhills Wildland Park
(10 min)

Just across the river, these sand dunes and forests are part of a protected wildland park—great for hiking, but no quads allowed.

Swan Hills Krause Lake OHV Area (1 hour North)

A Crown land riding zone near Swan Hills. The staging site is just 7 km southwest of Swan Hills town, so from Woodlands RV this works out to roughly 70 km. Mostly intermediate terrain—good for confident beginners and seasoned riders alike.

Fishing

Whether you’re chasing trophy catches or quiet moments with a rod, our waters (and beyond) deliver.

On-Site Fishing

Cast a line steps from your campsite.

Freeman River (15 Minutes)

Wild waters, wilder fish.

Still waters run deep—and full of surprises. Approximately 20 km’s northeast of Swan Hills off Hwy. 33

Golfing

Tucked between two local courses, we’re a handy stop for golfers looking to fuel up.

Barrhead Golf Club (20 Minutes South)

A local 18-hole favorite with lush greens, and a clubhouse famous for post-round burgers. Perfect for casual swings or teaching the kids.

A 9-hole, par 36 course spanning 3,140 yards—built and run entirely by volunteers since 1989.

Live Entertainment & Fine Dining At Gems Cafe & Bistro

Fine dining is just 2 minutes away, with a weekly changing menu built around fresh, local ingredients. Gems was voted #1 Café by Town & Country Magazine across Woodlands, Barrhead, Westlock, and Athabasca Counties.

Friday Night Live!

Every Friday, Gems buzzes with energy as local bands take the stage—think blues, folk, or foot-stomping country. Pair the rhythm with their signature meat & seafood platters.

Bistro Nights (Tue–Sat)

Wednesday to Saturday, Gems opens for a slower, more intimate kind of dining. Think farm-to-table meals, and hand-picked wines—worth staying in town for. Chef Adrian Constantin aims to create more than just a meal—but an experience that connects people to place, season, and story.

For the Coffee Connoisseur

Gems serves some of the best coffee in Northern Alberta, working with over 30 local roasters and rotating through more than 100 locally roasted coffees. It’s a destination for anyone who takes their brew seriously. They also offer coffee subscriptions—so you’ll never have to worry about packing coffee or running out, no matter where you are.
