I’ve spent most of my life building things—roads, businesses, and now this campground. I started my first business when I was 23, up in the Peace River country. I bought a grader and got to work building roads and spreading gravel. Within a few years, I had a dozen machines running across northern Alberta, from Grand Prairie and Wabasca to High Level.

Over the years, I’ve been involved in a little bit of everything—construction, greenhouse operations, the oil and gas industry, and running a 120-unit equipment rental company. But what I’ve always cared about most is creating something useful, something lasting, and something that brings people together.

In the early 2000s, I bought the piece of land that Woodlands RV Park & Marina is built on, right here in Fort Assiniboine. At the time, all I really wanted was a place to go riverboating. But the more time I spent on the land, the more I saw its potential. I started with 40 campsites and a simple vision—and I never stopped building. Today, we’ve grown to over 60 sites, added a gated marina, and welcomed a growing community of campers who come back year after year.

What makes this place special isn’t just the setting or the amenities—it’s the people. I’ve met incredible families here. I’ve watched kids grow up summer after summer. And I still love handing out ice cream cones and seeing the smiles they bring.

Whether you’re here to camp, fish, unwind by the river, or you’re part of the community curious about what we’re building—welcome. I’m proud of what we’ve started at Woodlands, and I’m excited for what’s still to come.

I’m not one for the spotlight, but I’ve had a hand in shaping almost every corner of this campground. While Alan’s out dreaming up the next project, I’m the one making sure things stay grounded—literally. I look after the landscaping, keep the grounds tidy, and make sure everything stays organized behind the scenes.

I’ve always believed the small details matter. Whether it’s a well-kept flower bed or making sure tools are where they belong, those quiet touches are part of what gives Woodlands its charm. I take pride in the routines that keep the place running smoothly—from seasonal prep to day-to-day upkeep.

This place has grown a lot over the years, and so has the work behind it. But I’ve always liked being the one making sure things feel cared for. It’s not glamorous, but it’s honest work—and that’s more than enough for me.

Jackson O’Brien

Jackson is our youngest son and a key part of the team this summer. He’s joining us at the campground to help with maintenance—keeping things running smoothly and lending a hand wherever it’s needed. You’ll often spot him with a tool in hand and a smile on his face.
